How It Started

I didn’t arrive at dance photography by accident. I was pulled into it when my older brother called at 5 a.m. in 1989, too sick to cover a scheduled dance school photoshoot. He told me, “Take your gear. The backgrounds are already set up. The teachers will pose the dancers. You just need to get there.”

At that point I didn’t consider myself a dance photographer, and I was terrified — these were dancers who deserved someone who knew what they were doing. But he was my brother, and he needed me. So I went. All day, I photographed dancer after dancer. Somewhere in the middle of that long day, something happened: I fell in love with dance photography.

Decades of Experience

Over the next couple of years, I photographed quite a few dance schools and recitals for my brother’s studio, but my career path took me elsewhere for a time. For decades my work focused primarily on senior portraits and sports photography. I also photographed hundreds of weddings, thousands of teams, executives in boardrooms, judges in their chambers, and families marking milestones.

Yet whenever a dancer came in for senior portraits, I set everything else aside to photograph them personally. I always knew, one day, I’d come back to dance.

Why Dance Photography

What I value most isn’t just crafting images, but working with people who take their art as seriously as I take mine. That’s why I love working with dancers. Dancers understand that real skill doesn’t come from shortcuts but from discipline, repetition, and the relentless pursuit of improvement. They notice when someone else brings that same level of care to their work, and that shared understanding makes photographing dancers uniquely rewarding.

My Approach

My approach is part artist, part collaborator. I work hard to make the process feel simple for my clients, but behind the scenes every detail is deliberate: lighting, posing, lines, mood.

It’s not about churning out pictures — it’s about creating images that mean something, images you’ll be proud to share and display. In the studio, I’m organized, prepared, and fully present, but I also know when to step back and let you explore, bringing your artistry into the frame. My role is to make you look your best and show everyone who you are and what you can do.

Shining Stars Photo Today

Shining Stars Photo grew out of this philosophy: to bring professional, dancer-specific photography to the people and places where it matters most — to dancers who want something more than cookie-cutter images, and to studios that want recital portraits handled with care and professionalism.

  • If you’re a studio owner, I’ll bring the studio to you with a full professional setup, organized scheduling, and a process that makes things easy for you and your dancers’ families.

  • If you’re an individual dancer, I’ll work with you to plan a custom session, from early inspiration to final artwork, whether in my studio or on location.

Closing

This isn’t just a business for me. It’s my life’s work and my art, shaped by decades of experience and a genuine respect for the dancers who step in front of my camera.

When the images come back, you’ll see —their character and commitment, their artistry and athleticism captured. And for the little beginners, you’ll see their cuteness and wonderful costumes posed so that you’ll be proud to have them on your web page.

Alongside my work, I share reflections on artistry, movement, and the creative process through my blog, Dance Photography Thoughts.

Certified Professional

Dance Photography Without Compromise

Shining Stars Photo is built on over 37 years of full-time professional photography experience, with a level of preparation few others bring to dance. I invest in dancer-specific education and training every year to stay sharp, and my studio is equipped with professional gear purchased exclusively for photographing dancers — not borrowed from wedding or family photography. Every lighting setup, background, and modifier is chosen with technique, lines, and movement in mind.

Where general photographers work across many genres, this is specialization. My work is focused on dancers and built on decades of discipline, professional practice, and the highest standards of equipment and craft. The result is photography that reflects the hard work and artistry dancers work so hard to achieve.

Wall-Worthy Photos

Each Shining Stars wall print is more than an image — it’s a lasting record. Technologies change, platforms disappear, but a handcrafted wall print signals this matters, and remains visible for decades. Long after your dance career has ended, it will still speak of who you were and what you accomplished.

A Stress-Free Picture Day

The Shining Stars Photo process for dance schools is built to make picture day simple. No paperwork, no delays — just an organized system that keeps dancers moving and focused.

Each family receives a private, passcode-protected online gallery. Prints can be ordered directly from the gallery and are shipped straight to parents’ homes.
